[FMPro] Changing Hosting IP Number
Greetings...
For some years I have run FileMaker Server here from my home serving up some databases for a non-profit genealogy society ( http://data.wmgs.org/ )
This has been connected by a (6 Mbps down/768 Kbps up) DSL line, but times have overtaken the speed of the DSL line and so I'm moving to a business cable connection - 5-6 times as fast both up and down for the same money.
So needless to say the IP number will be changing and I'm trying to see if I can figure out a way to effect this change with minimal interruption.
The FileMaker Server machine is a Mac Pro, which has 2 ethernet ports, and the database server is a Mac mini running FileMaker Server 11. They're connected locally by gigabit ethernet through an Airport Extreme.
My plan for the change is to connect the new cable connection to the second ethernet port on the Mac Pro, so that presumably the Mac Pro becomes reachable from both outside networks, and on each router, forward the port 80 requests to the local IP number that the Mac Pro has.
Is the FileMaker Server running on the Mac Pro (I know that the Apache can work on more than one interface) capable of working on both of these interfaces, and then no matter which one it is, making the request to the database server which will only be on one of the LANs?
If so, then I guess the change is easy - get the networking set up here to put the Mac Pro on both networks and then go change the DNS entries at the various places (apart from the data.wmgs.org I also have more than a dozen other domains hosted on my Mac Pro for various things) and as it propagates people will switch from accessing by the DSL line to accessing by the cable connection and hopefully within a day or 2 there will be no traffic on the DSL line and I can have it turned off.
Is this workable, or is there something about FileMaker server that would prevent this happening?
Thanks
Roger
