Filemaker 11 and email
It wasn't my intention to rain on the FMP 11 parade. There's plenty to
love in the new version. The speed of dropdown menus from field value
lists is just one area where there has been huge improvement, as is
the new inspector palette, which will certainly speed up some aspects
of development. Hard not to like fast find too; its browser-like
interface is a natural for users.
But developers are also frontline salespeople for Filemaker, and, at
least among my market niche, it will be hard sell to get a client to
upgrade 12-20 seats to gain dashboard pie charts or filtered portals.
The ones who upgraded to version 10 last year are likely take a pass
on this release. The upgrade's strongest appear will be for those
running 8-8.5 who face the prospect of being orphaned after Sept. 23
-- or who have deep pockets. I doubt I'm the only developer whose
clients' data needs run much deeper than their pockets.
I focused on the lack of progress on email because this feature set's
shortcomings affect every single system I built and support. Improved
email and PDF-to-email capabilities are the features my clients most
wanted.
