Hardware Questions...
HI All,
We are considering upgrading our hardware for both our FileMaker Server and Web Server.
Currently our system is as follows:
FMP 9 Advanced Server:
• Dell Rack Server PE 1950
• 3.6 GHz, 4 GB ram.
• OS: Windows Sever 2003 R2
• FileMaker Pro Server Advanced v 9.0.3.325
o Settings: 800 mg. ram allowed
o 92 Databases allowed (Max)
o Cache: 00.01
o Current System includes 74 Databases (11.2 Gb Total)
 Largest File 5,601,168 kb.
o Web Publishing Settings:
 100 Sessions
 PHP - ON
 XML - ON
 IWP - OFF
 XSLT - OFF
 ODBC - OFF
o Normal Traffic Usage - 25 Clients Internal
o Web Clients - Unknown
IIS Server:
• Celeron Tower CPU
• 2.66 GHz, 1.46 GB ram.
• OS: Windows XP Version 2002, Service Pack 2
• PHP 5.2.55
• IIS : v 5.1
• Java: v6 update 20 (Build 1.6.0_20-boz)
Our biggest issue is the slow web response. The internal Users are OK, speed wise. So our main objective is to speed up web users, who now are viewing graphs and long lists on out client website, thru PHP. We will be upgrading the FileMaker Server Software to FMP Server Advance 11.
Questions:
• In considering new hardware, is a dual processor really important to speed for the web?
• Is buying an actual windows server machine with Server 2008, better than just using a windows 7 tower for speed?
• Is Windows 2008 faster, or is Windows 7 faster, OS wise?
• The newer server machines have several kinds of ram, and one of the options is like way more than the computer, for just the ram. ( Single Ranked vs. Dual Ranked)
o Will 16 GB give us more speed than 12 GB? Is it worth the extra cost?
o Can FileMaker take advantage of this much ram, or should we just get 8GB?
• Will adding a second IIS server make a big difference in speed for the web clients, since they all talk to the one server?
Assuming cost for the hardware was not a factor, could someone help us understand what is best for a business, to get the fastest speed for our web clients and our internal clients, using FileMaker Pro Advanced 11 Server Software? Thanks for your help everyone.
Thanks,
James Toland
