How Best to Update Program?
I am an amateur programmer (Windows Vista and FM 10 Advanced) who supports
several non-profit databases. Can someone please tell me the best way to
update a FileMaker program by having the user download an executable update
file (similar to commercial program updates to a new version)?
As things stand now, I have to either be on-site or have the user take the
program off-line (so no new data is entered) and e-mail it to me. I then
have to export all the data tables and re-import them into the updated
program before installing the updated program file on the host computer. I
wrote a  script to export all the tables to Excel, but it’s still
time-consuming to delete all the records and remap the fields before
importing the files. I have found that FileMaker frequently doesn’t match
the field names correctly, so there’s some real grunt work involved. I'm
sure there's a better way. Plug-in perhaps?
I thought about having two related files, one of which only contains the
data tables, but there are still changes in the “Program File” so I’m not
sure thatÂ’s worth the extra hassle.
Thanks.
