Brian Beer
Reciprocal Relationship (and introduction)
First off, I'm new here (I've been on list for a few months, but this
is my first post) and I thought I should briefly introduce myself. My
name is Brian Beer and I am the Advertising Manager (and part-time
database developer) for Penn State Press, a mid-size University
Press. I've been using Filemaker for almost nine years, but have only
been developing for about two. We just recently upgraded our press-
wide database to 9 from 5.5. It is still multi-file. We do have a
couple of PCs, but like most publishers were primarily a Mac house. I
use both 10.5 and 10.6.
Now my question: I've been trying to figure this one out for a couple
weeks, and I've searched the archives, but I'm not sure that my
terminology is correct. What i want to do is build a reciprocal (or
multi-directional) self-join relationship. To be specific, certain
books are "also of interest" to certain other books--Terrorism in
Context would interest readers of From Pablo to Osama. This part is
pretty straightforward: a join table books to books, newBookID to
newBookID. However, one can assume the inverse to be true--From Pablo
to Osama would interest readers of Terrorism in Context.
(How) can I build a relationship that works in both directions, A is
related to B and B is simultaneously related to A. Do I need two
entries for each relationship, or is there a way to create a
calculated match field, or is there some other way I haven't thought of?
Thanks in advance. I've already learned a lot from this list.
Best,
Brian
